Basic Function

Duties include HTML production, file maintenance, and timely communication with the Web Diva and Assistant Web Diva. Expect to spend 5 to 10 hours a week during peak periods. Web Assistants work from home using a text editor such as BBEdit for the Mac or HomeSite or EditPlus for Windows (the preferred HTML editors).

Responsibilities

Your are expected to be an active participant in maintaining the chapter Web site, the Region 2 site, and the AccessAbility SIG site. You are encouraged to offer your own ideas and special talents. You will be a member of discussion lists for the AccessAbility SIG to help the Assistant Web Diva monitor postings for links to be added to the Resources pages on the site. You may also be asked to update links to newsletters and conference information. All committee members help the committee manger with status report contributions and may voice objective opinions concerning the committee's issues.

You will work on files you receive from the Assistant Web Diva. You will return updated files to the Assistant Web Diva who will review them and post them to the site. Files may not be edited in View Source in the browser because the server side includes would be included in the page shown in the browser. You will not have to work with the design template pages—just the main body content of pages.

You will be asked to assist with updates to all pages on the site. Some specific pages you will help maintain are

Experience and Skills

  • Experience and confidence with handcoding XHTML 1.0 Strict
  • Experience with Cascading Style Sheets Level 2.1
  • Experience with WordPress 2.7
  • Knowledge of accessibility and Section 508 requirements for Web sites; experience preferred
  • Familiararity with PHP includes and modularized site structure
  • Familiararity with Unix server side includes and modularized site structure
  • Knowledge of and access to FTP software
  • Familiarity with file maintenance and version control
  • Experience with Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Acrobat helpful
  • Familiarity with JavaScript (optional)

Equipment

Your own computer and software. A text editor such as Homesite 5 for Windows or BBEdit for Macintosh.

Time Commitment

Expect to spend 5 to 10 hours a week during turnover periods between chapter years updating changes to chapter officers, event schedules, competitions, and so forth. Expect to spend 2 to 4 hours a week during other times for updating changes to job announcement, talent pool, and documentation contractors/consultants pages; event announcements; conferences and seminar announcements; and other pages as needed.
