Course Description: Substantive Editing

Note: This Knowledge University program can hold up to 18 participants. A waiting list will be started once we reach full capacity. Please contact Vacant , at . EEI requires that we have a minimum of 14 seats filled. EEI also maintains an 8-day cancellation policy.

The author might have sweat blood over the copy, but you're still faced with a document that needs work. Sound familiar? The course will teach you how to edit for clarity and meaning, sharpen your ability to spot factual errors and redundancy, and how to outline and organize unfocused materials without abandoning the author's voice. About the Instructor

photo of Morris BermanMorris Berman, Ph.D., is the author of five books and nearly fifty articles. He received the Governor's Writers Award (Washington State) for Coming to our Senses, published in 1989, and was director of the Seattle Writers' Guild from 1996 to 1998. His most recent work, The Twilight of American Culture (2000), was named a "Notable Book" by The New York Times Book Review. He has taught numerous classes and workshops on the techniques of nonfiction writing and editing, and is a visiting faculty member at the Catholic University of America.

Food

EEI will provide pastries, muffins, bagels, coffee and tea in the morning. Lunch is on your own. There are a number of restaurants located in downtown Silver Spring.


Registration

Because there are a limited number of spaces for this course, we require all attendees to register and pay in advance.

To register for this event, complete the online Event Registration form.

Registration deadline: 8 p.m., Thursday, 6 October 2005. Payments by check or PayPal must be received by this date. Entrance is not guaranteed until we receive your advance payment.

We cannot offer free admission to this event.

Note: Your registration will be canceled if seating capacity is reached and your payment has not been received. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Use PayPal or allow ample time for mail delivery.

Admission fees help to offset the costs of our programs. Our attendees pay slightly different fees depending on whether they are members, nonmembers, students, chapter volunteers, or walk-ins. We also sometimes offer a program-only option for programs that are not held in restaurants.

We cannot offer free admission to this event, as we do at other times in exchange for volunteers' help before or during the event.

Payment

You may pay by sending a check through the U.S. Mail or by making a secure online payment through our PayPal page using your credit card, debit card, bank account, or by paying money from a funded PayPal account. (Using PayPal allows you to make purchases without revealing your credit card number or financial information to us.) We also accept cash or checks at the door. Walk-ins pay the walk-in fee listed under Fees.

Cancellations

Cancellation deadline: 8 p.m., Thursday, 6 October 2005. A full refund will be returned to you if you cancel by the deadline.

To cancel a registration, contact the Events Committee Manager, Vacant , at as soon as possible. No shows who do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed.
