About the Event

Our presenter will address the following points:

  • What an index is (and is not)
  • Why indexes are important
  • What makes a good index
  • What goes in the index
  • The indexing process, step by step

Participants will gain hands-on experience, including opportunities to evaluate published indexes as well as to compile a sample index from a technical document. Participants will come away with several indexing tools and resources.

If you attend, you are strongly encouraged to bring examples of indexing problems you've faced and/or examples of indexes you found inadequate or exemplary.

Target audience

Technical writers or any others not temperamentally inclined or professionally trained to be an indexer but who are forced to index (particularly technical documents).

About the Speaker

Maria Coughlin has been indexing since 1985. She is currently president of Coughlin Indexing Services, Inc., a freelance indexing service employing 8 full-time and 2 part-time indexers. Maria's subject specialty areas are medicine and science, and her employees specialize individually in areas ranging from literature, history, political science, and computers to popular culture. Maria has served as an officer in the DC chapter of the American Society of Indexers (ASI) as well as a board member and officer of ASI at the national level. Maria is a Founding Fellow of the Consortium of Indexing Professionals. She has published several articles on indexing and she has given numerous presentations both nationally and internationally.

Food

Coffee, juice and pastries will be served in the morning. Lunch, at one of many nearby affordable restaurants, will be on your own.

Fees and Registration

MicroStrategy employees may attend the event at no cost. Please submit the online reservation form so that the event planner knows that you are coming.

Admission Fees

$25 STC members with advance registration
$20 Confirmed present event volunteers with advance registration
$15 Students with advance registration
$40 Nonmembers with advance registration
$50 Walk-ins and late registrations (after October 18)

Admission fees help to offset the costs of our programs. Fees may vary from program to program because of the costs of food and beverages, room rental, and other services. Our attendees pay slightly different fees depending on whether they are members, nonmembers, students, chapter volunteers, or walk-ins. We also sometimes offer a program-only option for programs that are not held in restaurants.

If you are involved in the planning or production of an event, you are entitled to free admission at that event. If you would like to help and thereby qualify for this discount, contact the Events Committee Manager at . Note that we do not accept last-minute volunteers unless we have an unanticipated need for extra help.

Registration

Registration is encouraged for this event. Please register by Saturday, 18 October, 2003 at 5 p.m. All who register after this date and time must pay the walk-in price. All information published under Advance reservation policy is applicable to this event.

To make a reservation, complete the online reservation form.

Payment

You may pay by sending a check through the U.S. Mail or by making a secure online payment through our PayPal page using your credit card, debit card, bank account, or by paying money from a funded PayPal account. (Using PayPal allows you to make purchases without revealing your credit card number or financial information to us.) We also accept cash or checks at the door. Walk-ins pay the walk-in fee listed under Admission fees.

If you have already registered and would like to submit a payment by check or through our PayPal page, see the reservation page for more detailed information about making a payment.

Cancellations

To cancel a registration, contact the Events Committee Manager as soon as possible. No shows who do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed.

Advance Reservation Policy

We encourage and sometimes require all attendees to register in advance. For events where advanced registration is required, we cannot accept reservations after the published deadline for the event.

If you are unable to register by the deadline, you can still attend the event as a walk-in, at the cost listed under Admission fees.

Restrictions:

  • We do not provide refunds for late arrivals.
  • We reserve the right to bill those who register for a program, do not pre-pay, and do not attend the program.
