Course Description: XML Development I

Note: This Knowledge University program can hold up to 18 participants. A waiting list will be started once we reach full capacity. Please contact Vacant , at . EEI requires that we have a minimum of 14 seats filled. EEI also maintains an 8-day cancellation policy.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is changing the way we author content and distribute information. XML enables the Web designer to create information that is evolvable: write it once and use it many times. This hands-on class is for those with no programming background who want to learn more about XML. Topics include

• XML structure and syntax
• Creating well-formed XML documents
• Creating document type definitions (DTDs) and schemas
• Creating valid XML documents
• Defining and using entities
• Displaying XML documents using cascading style sheets
• Displaying XML documents using data binding
• Displaying XML documents using document object model scripts

About the Instructor

Mary Gillen is a writer, Web developer and technical trainer who has owned her own business since 1981. She has over 20 years of experience in freelance commercial copywriting, graphics design, and creative marketing concepts. Mary has been an active Web developer and marketer since 1995. She is the co-developer of Idea Site for Business, a site dedicated to providing useful ideas for creative business people. The site was mentioned in Microsoft Corporation's TV series "America At Work: A Roadmap To The Internet", and has been highlighted in such publications as The LA Times, PC Novice Magazine, and many others.

Mary has developed Web sites for such organizations as The World Bank, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Cancer Research Foundation of America, Allergy Supply Company and many others. She also teaches Web development courses that include HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CGI Scripting, XML, NetObjects Fusion, Cold Fusion and e-commerce. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts at North Dartmouth and is a candidate for a MFA degree in Creative Writing from George Mason University. URL: http://marygillen.com

Food

EEI will provide pastries, muffins, bagels, coffee and tea in the morning. Lunch is on your own. There are a number of restaurants located in downtown Silver Spring.

Registration

Because there are a limited number of spaces for this course, we require all attendees to register and pay in advance.

To register for this event, complete the online Event Registration form.

Registration deadline: 8 p.m., Thursday, 16 February 2006. Payments by check or PayPal must be received by this date. Entrance is not guaranteed until we receive your advance payment.

We cannot offer free admission to this event.

Please take note of the following information.

• Entrance is not guaranteed until receipt of advance payment.
• Registration will be closed at occupancy limit (18 seats are available). When capacity is reached, a notification will be provided at the top of this page. We will start a waiting list at that time and you will be notified whether or not there is space available for you in the class.
• We do not provide refunds for late arrivals.
• We reserve the right to bill those who register for a program, do not pre-pay, and do not attend the program.
• You will receive a full refund if you cancel before Thursday, 16 February 2006.

Note: Your registration will be canceled if seating capacity is reached and your payment has not been received. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Use PayPal or allow ample time for mail delivery.

Admission fees help to offset the costs of our programs. Our attendees pay slightly different fees depending on whether they are members, nonmembers, students, chapter volunteers, or walk-ins. We also sometimes offer a program-only option for programs that are not held in restaurants.

We cannot offer free admission to this event, as we do at other times in exchange for volunteers' help before or during the event.

Payment

You may pay by sending a check through the U.S. Mail or by making a secure online payment through our PayPal page using your credit card, debit card, bank account, or by paying money from a funded PayPal account. (Using PayPal allows you to make purchases without revealing your credit card number or financial information to us.) We also accept cash or checks at the door. Walk-ins pay the walk-in fee listed under Fees.

Cancellations

Cancellation deadline: 8 p.m., Thursday, 16 February 2006. A full refund will be returned to you if you cancel by the deadline.

To cancel a registration, contact the Events Committee Manager, Vacant , at as soon as possible. No shows who do not notify us that they need to cancel will be billed.
