President 2008-2009; 1st Vice President 2007-2008, STC Washington DC Chapter
Marylyn has worked in the technical communication profession since 1983 as an individual contributor, a manager, and a director. A senior member, Marylyn has presented at STC international society and WDC chapter events, and has authored event reviews and a column called "The Manager's Files" for the WDC newsletter, The Capital Letter. Currently, she is the chapter's First Vice President. She is also chairing the WDC committee to evaluate the chapter's website with user-centered design techniques.
Marylyn has adopted "The Value of Innovation" as her slogan. She approaches situations and assignments with a drive to understand the content, the context, and the customer. Equipped with information and recommendations from others and fresh insights of her own, she strives to determine what matters and why, and then proceed to working out a streamlined solution.
Those who have worked with Marylyn as peers, supervisors, subordinates, or co-volunteers have recognized her leadership qualities. On several occasions, she has been promoted from within her organization. Others seek her advice on matters of strategy, such as how to expand the influence of technical writers into software usability consultants; of implementation, such as how to transition from unstructured to structured authoring; and on negotiation, such as how to meet multiple requirements that make competing demands on their time.
Keeping up with current trends in the profession, Marylyn retains a fresh and interested perspective. She studies XML, usability, plain language, content management, and information architecture, as well as general management and consulting. Marylyn understands the technical communication profession and has a keen sense of where it is heading.
Marylyn is also a participating member of the Usability Professionals Association – DC Metro chapter, DC Web Women, and DC Information Architects. She holds a B.S. in education and an M.A. in English from the University of North Texas.
